Car: From South Shields it takes approximately 15-20 minutes to pick up the A19 or A194(M), which connects to the A1(M).

Train: Various Metro stops across South Tyneside makes travelling easy. Metro trains from South Shields to Newcastle run approximately every 12 minutes and the journey to your desired destination only takes about 20 to 25 minutes, (depending on which stop you get on). Both Newcastle and Sunderland train stations also provide services to York and London.

Aeroplane: With Newcastle International Airport only 30 to 40 minutes’ drive away, you can be off on holiday in no time. But, with such beautiful beaches in South Shields, you might be tempted to opt for a staycation in the summer.

Ferry: Although you can’t technically travel by ferry from South Tyneside, you can by cross over to the Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal in North Shields and take a DFDS ferry to Holland.

3. It’s home to famous faces…

Joe McElderry and Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall are all from sunny South Shields. And, they have been known to return to their home town to perform at The South Tyneside Festival – an annual free summer festival in Bents Park – a beautiful public park along the seafront. If you’re partial to a bit of celeb spotting, you never know who you will come across while living in South Tyneside, as it is also home to famous comedians Sarah Millican and Chris Ramsey – who starred in a sitcom set in Hebburn. However, long before the modern-day celebrity began to fly the flag for South Shields, 20th-century novelist Catherine Cookson who grew up in the area too, wrote many of her novels based on life in and around the North East. In honour of her legacy, she has a permanent exhibition at South Shields Museum & Art Gallery.

4. There’s so much to see and do…

Whether you want to enjoy a movie, catch a theatre show or watch a live band – The Customs House has got it covered. Located in a lovely conservation area of Mill Dam, the arts and entertainment centre, which is open 363 days of the year, offers a range of entertainment programmes for all the family.

Ocean Road in South Shields town centre is a go-to place to unwind on an evening or during the weekend. It’s home to a great selection of restaurants offering a range of cuisine from traditional British fish and chips to Thai and Indian, plus there are also several bars making it the perfect place for post-dinner drinks.

South Shields town centre is home to high street names such as NEXT, River Island, Boots, Greggs, B&M, and WHSmith. Plus, there’s a selection of supermarkets including Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi, and Sainsburys. Alongside the high street names are also a good selection of independent shops as well as luxury clothing label J. Barbour & Sons Ltd, which was founded in South Shields.  If you’re looking for more big-name shops then Sunderland, Newcastle and intu Metrocentre in Gateshead are approximately a 30-minute drive away.

As a resident in South Shields, it’s never been easier to get fit whether you choose to walk or run along the beaches or join one of the local centres. There are some fantastic indoor and outdoor leisure facilities including Haven Point which has a swimming pool, gym, and dance studios. There’s also Temple Park Centre which hosts indoor football and aerobic classes.  Further afield the Hebburn Hub – a £12.8m state-of-the-art community hub – offers everything from a six-lane swimming pool and sports hall to a soft play area, library and learning centre. Plus, there are some great golf courses with panoramic sea views in Boldon and Whitburn. Those fit enough can even sign up for the largest half marathon in the world, The Great North Run, which starts in Newcastle and finishes on the seafront in South Shields.
